Choosing The Right Make Up For Acne
When using an acne treatment, you may need to change some of the cosmetics you use. All cosmetics should be oil free, when in doubt read the label. Products that are labeled as non-comedogenic (does not promote the formation of closed pores) should be used; in some people, however, even these products may cause acne. Products used to treat oily hair may come in contact with the forehead, causing closed comedones. Hair sprays, gels and styling products can also cause clogged pores and care should be taken to avoid having these products come in contact with the facial skin.

Adult Acne And Rosacea
Adult Acne may co-exist with Rosacea in approximately 82% of sufferers. Adult acne, sometimes referred to as "Acne Rosacea", involves the presence of acne pimples. Acne rosacea is definitely food-related and stress-related. Stress and fatigue cause increased production of hormones by the adrenal gland with increased levels of androgens. These hormones worsens acne. And in women adult acne usually gets worse a week before the menstrual period as the natural estrogen in the body is reduced and as the estrogen increases during the menses; the menstrual period ends as the estrogen reaches the normal level. Acne rosacea often evolves from an irritated acne skin that has been abused with aggressive prolonged acne treatment. Acne rosacea usually develops in the 30's to 40's and the treatment is more delicate as often what improves the acne further stresses the rosacea. Please note that acne pimples with pus resulting from bacteria are 'not' rosacea papules which do not have pus but a raised "red" lesion that usually does not change in any way for weeks or months.

Acne Etiology, Cause Or Cure
Acne partially results from an overly acidic body and skin. The pH (potential of hydrogen) as you remember from your high school general science or chemistry class, ranges from 0 to 14 with 7 being neutral. As you rethink your past history, you will see that ‘all’ the acne triggers come from ‘acidic items’ regardless of whether they are foods, drinks, stress, or merely out of breath. We all know that if we hold our breath for 30 seconds or 60 seconds, we will all notice that our face turns pink or red. We all know, but hardly think that the cause is a build up of carbon dioxide which is an ‘acidic’ gas and we have a shortage of oxygen. Very similarly, when we exercise for a short period, we have a build up of ‘lactic acid’, which is a body waste, which is obviously acidic. Likewise, those with acne need to be very concerned about the build up of acids in our blood stream due to the foods and beverages that we consume. We all know of our triggers such as alcohol, coffee, various medications, etc. which all have a pH below 7.0 or are termed acidic. Our objective therefore should be to balance, buffer or neutralize the acids with alkaline.
Acidity is measured as a pH of 1 to 7. Alkalinity is 7 to 14.The numbers refer to how many hydrogen atoms are present compared to an ideal or standard solution. Normally, blood is slightly alkaline, at 7.35 to 7.45; urine pH is the best and easiest way to check on the proper foods and drinks being eaten. Try to keep the pH in the 6.8 to 7.00 range for optimal functioning of the body and brain. If we are excessively alkaline, we don't have the mental and physical 'go' so we need our 'energy' brain and muscle foods and drinks during the day and very alkaline foods at night to calm the body and brain (parasympathetic system).
This scale is logarithmic; meaning that each number is ten times stronger than the preceding number. For example, a pH of 2 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 3 and one hundred times more acidic than a pH of 4.
Water is alkaline with a pH of about 7.3, and likewise more alkaline foods such as more “fresh vegetables and fruits are needed which are alkaline (higher pH than 7.0). Acidic foods and drinks are the problem with a pH of below 7.0 such as coffee at 2.2. Please review the attached list of foods and drinks as a very helpful aid in selecting the best foods to add pH (primarily fruits and vegetables) by the use of greens to your Acne Flushing Bank account to prevent overdraw or going into red or flushing. To improve your total body and skin condition, eat and drink 90% of the alkaline foods with 10% meats while avoiding breads, pastas, sugars, desserts, etc.
The body has several different ways to ensure that the pH balance stays in the normal range of 7.35 to 7.45. These are referred to as buffer systems. Through normal day-to-day activity in the body, acids are formed as waste products that need to be neutralized, alkalized, or buffered and eliminated. Some of the acids are released with CO2 from exhaling; others are excreted via the kidneys. With acidic foods and drinks, there is always more carbon dioxide (acidic) while alkaline foods produce much more oxygen (think of your high school classes of the tree, grass, and plants giving off oxygen). These systems work together in the healthy human body to keep the pH level within normal ranges. Sometimes with extreme intake of acidic foods and drinks, the normal system cannot compensate and the body becomes even more stressed resulting in more stress hormones, which are also acidic in nature causing more of a blush/flush. Likewise, simple illnesses such as influenza, minor surgery, or emotional and mental stress continue to lower the pH of the body and with more resulting skin blushing and flushing. Likewise, almost all medications are acidic except anti-acid medications such as Zantac, Milk of Magnesium, etc.
You can make sure that your water and many foods are alkaline by purchasing pH paper at most drug stores at a cost of $12 to measure the pH of the water, drink or foods. Your urine should be in the 6.8 pH range most often as the culmination of the body process. As you can imagine if you drink and eat many acidic foods, the result will be deterioration of the skin, body organs & bones.
The adrenal cortex secretes cortisol, a natural body hormone of about 10 mg of cortisol daily, with peak cortisol levels occurring early in the morning and therefore the acne flushing and papules will look best in early mornings after this natural anti-inflammatory drug. The hormone that will report back to the original brain centers together with other body organs to tell it to stop the whole cycle. But since cortisol is a potent hormone, the prolonged secretion of it will lead to health problems such as the break down of cardiovascular system, digestive system, musculoskeletal system with resulting osteoporosis and arthritis - rheumatism, and the immune system. Also when the organism does not have a chance for recovery, it will lead to both catecholamine and cortisol depletion. The whole idea is "not to keep" the body in a 'fight or flight' system with any stress, stimulation or food/drinks.

The Facts On Acne Pimples
Acne pimples are a common disorder developed in teenagers and also adult acne which are due to the inflammation of skin as the skin is too acidic as superficial skin acne eruption caused by the blockage of skin pores where bacteria resides. Usually acne appears on the face but acne can also extend to neck, chest and back also where the acne blocked pores are harder to wash. Not all acne is the same. Simplistically, acne can be divided into acne red bumps and acne blackheads/whiteheads. This division is important because each type is treated differently. Blackheads and acne whiteheads, known as comedones, can be more numerous on the face and shoulders than acne red bumps filled with pus. Good consistent skin acne free hygiene can help improve acne prevention. Therefore, knowing more about the cause of acne comedones and how to treat acne inflammation is a step towards the proper adult acne treatment.
All adult acne is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, which is made up of a hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and a hair. These acne prone units are found everywhere on the body except the palms, soles, top of the feet, and the lower lip. The number of acne prone units are greatest on the face, upper neck, and chest. Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum, which is responsible for keeping the skin and hair moisturized. During adolescence sebum production increases due to hormones and improper acne acidic/toxin diests fo the modern world. After about age 20, sebum production begins to decrease as the hormone system is mature. However, adult acne continues as the body and brain is stressed.
The oily substance produced by the sebaceous gland combines with adult acne cells being sloughed off within the hair follicle and "fills up" the hair follicle. When the follicle is "full", the sebum spreads over the skin surface giving the skin an oily acne prone appearance. When this process works correctly, the skin is moisturized and remains acne free & healthy.
Problems arise when the sebum is trapped in the hair acne prone hair follicle. Some hair follicles become obstructed due to excessive sebum. The sebum is produced but gets trapped on the way out and is a cause of acne. A certain bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes multiplies in this trapped sebum and causes infection. This leads to inflammatory acult acne, or acne red bumps and acne pustules. In some follicles the bacteria does not cause an acne infection, but rather changes the lining of the hair follicle and forms plugs called acne comedones.

Types Of Acne Cysts
Acne cysts can appear similar to nodules, but are pus-filled, and have been described as having a diameter of 5mm or more across. They can be painful. Again, scarring is common. Squeezing a cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last much longer than if you had left it alone. Dermatologists often have ways of lessening swelling and preventing scarring. Types of cyst include:
Localized cystic: a few cysts on face, chest and back
Diffuse cystic: wide areas of face, chest and back involved
Pyoderma faciale: inflamed cysts localized on the face of females
Acne conglobata: highly inflammatory, with cysts that communicate under the skin with abscesses and burrowing sinus tracts.

What is Acne?
Acne is the most common skin disease during adolescence and early adulthood. Acne peaks in females between the ages of 14 and 17 and in males between the ages of 16 and 19. Males are affected more severely with acne than females. Eighty-five percent of high school students will have some acne. Ten percent of those with adolescent acne will continue to suffer from it into their 20’s and 30’s and later and termed "adult acne" and will continue due to stress, fatigue and too many acidic foods / drinks and not enough alkaline foods and drinks which can cause increased production of hormones by the adrenal gland with increased levels of androgens and thus more adult acne.

Astringents May Increase Pimples
Astringent soaps and any astringent agents that shrink your skin's pores, such as witch hazel, alum, oatmeal, very cold water, and rubbing alcohol, should be avoided. When your pores shrink, more oils are clogged in the pores of the skin.

Acne Causes
Acne develops when one or more of the following occurs: excess sebum production, rapid production of P. acnes, skin cells shed too quickly and/or release of inflammatory substances. For treatment to work it must interfere with what is causing the acne. Today’s acne treatments do one or more of the following:
• Decrease sebum production
• Reduce P. acnes (bacteria)
• Normalize skin shedding
• Eliminate inflammation
• Decrease sebum production
• Reduce P. acnes (bacteria)

Looking For Results From Your Acne Treatment - Try Acne-Ltd
Ever notice how every acne treatment seems to be the same and produce the same results?
Take a look at the labels for acne products, and you'll probably find one of two things: the magic ingredient in Neutrogena face washes (salicylic acid) and the one in the popular mail-order brand Proactiv (benzoyl peroxide).
They're the same two active ingredients found in virtually every acne product that's available without a prescription.
And that means that despite the array of bottles and tubes lining store shelves, there are few options out there for attacking an unwelcome rite of adolescence -- acne.
While there is science behind what causes acne, treating it is mostly a game of trial and error, said dermatologist Neera Agarwal-Antal.
"Acne's a very complicated disease," she said.
If you are tired of the same results from your acne treatment, try looking for a different type of treatment.
The ingredients of Acne-Ltd III are: zinc oxide, magnesium stearate, sodium chloride, iron oxide, copper oxide, polyethylene glycol, and sulfur (sulfur is used externally only and not to be confused with sulfa which is taken internally only). These ingredients are compressed under 22,000 pounds of pressure per square inch into a very concentrated 'smooth solid form' for easy application to the facial skin areas. As Acne-Ltd III is highly concentrated, it will normally last 9 to 12 months.
Leave the face wet after washing and apply Acne-Ltd III by simply gliding the Acne-Ltd III over the affected areas. The ingredients are dissolved onto the affected areas leaving an invisible application that continues to improve the skin condition while not being visible on the skin. Acne-Ltd III is not a 'cover up cosmetic' as it is invisible on the skin. Acne-Ltd III has more than 99% undiluted conditioning ingredients with a pH of 7.0 (the pH balance of normal skin).
Furthermore, Acne-Ltd III is free of any potentially irritating preservatives, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, and Quaternium-15, and contains no irritating fragrances.

Extended Release Minocycline Approved For Severe Acne
Medicis has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") has approved its New Drug Application ("NDA") for SOLODYN(TM) (minocycline HCl, USP) Extended Release Tablets. SOLODYN(TM) is the only oral minocycline approved for once daily dosage in the treatment of inflammatory lesions of non-nodular moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older. SOLODYN(TM) is also the only approved minocycline in extended release tablet form. SOLODYN(TM) is lipid soluble, and its mode of action occurs in the skin and sebum. SOLODYN(TM) is not bioequivalent to any other minocycline products, and is in no way interchangeable with other forms of minocycline.
The dosing and administration for SOLODYN(TM) is unique, and redefines minocycline therapy for acne. Based on extensive multi-year clinical trials conducted by Medicis in which over 1,000 patients participated, the recommended dosage for SOLODYN(TM) is 1 mg/kg daily. In Medicis sponsored studies, higher doses of minocycline were tested against SOLODYN(TM), and did not show additional therapeutic benefits in the treatment of inflammatory lesions of acne. These higher doses, consistent with traditional minocycline use, may actually be associated with more acute vestibular side effects.

Acne Treatment And Prevention
You can prevent acne or stop further spread of the inflammation by following some acne prevention tips that include proper maintenance of skin, hair, diet and little physical exercise.
It is suggested to keep the body parts clean, particularly which are acne-prone like face, neck, back and genital areas. Wash them with a mild soap at least twice a day. Avoid using fragranced soaps or rough cleansing pads. If your skin is oily, you should clean your skin of oils, but do not over dry the skin or vigorously scrub the skin. After using soap, be sure to clean it properly. If you sweat, clean them as soon as possible.
Avoid using cosmetics that include lots of chemicals and fragrance. You should also choose oil-free cosmetics which do not have the potential to clog pores. Remove make-up and cosmetic applications with a mild soap before going to sleep. Cosmetics may clog your pores and promote acne. Also, do not contaminate make-up and cosmetic application devices by reusing them in acne-infected parts.
Do not try to remove pimples by popping and squeezing them. This pushes the infectious materials, contained in the pimple, further into the skin and increases the severity of acne. It may also help further spread of acne.
Avoid tight clothes and other articles that rub on acne-prone areas for acne preventions. Keep your pillow cases, sheets, towel, hanky, etc, clean. The articles should be washed frequently with a mild detergent.
Besides, do not expose your skin to sunlight. Sunburn is extremely dangerous to the skin. Try to remain in shade as much as possible that may help you in acne prevention.

The Hidden Impact of Acne
"There is no single disease which causes more psychic trauma, more maladjustment between parents and children, more general insecurity and feelings of inferiority and greater sums of psychic suffering than does acne vulgaris." --Sulzberger & Zaldems, 1948
While known for quite some time, the psychosocial effects of acne have not been fully appreciated until recently. The reasons for this are many. After all, everyone gets acne to one degree or another. In most cases, it goes away on its own. While it's running its course, it is not a serious threat to anyone's overall physical health. In addition, until the last couple of decades, there was very little anyone could do to treat it.
Acne, nonetheless, has a significant impact on a person's outlook on life. Recent studies have detected the following as common among people with acne:
Social withdrawal
Decreased self-esteem
Reduced self-confidence
Poor body image
Embarrassment
Feelings of depression
Anger
Preoccupation
Frustration
Higher rate of unemployment
The effects listed above are often interrelated, with one effect leading to another and another, only to make the first effect worse. These negative psychosocial effects can have a crippling impact, discouraging patients from pursuing life's opportunities--socially, on the job, or at school.
Actual quotes from people with acne
The fact is, people with acne generally hate the way they look with acne. Let people with acne tell you-here are some testimonials about living with acne*:
Verbatim #1
"I don't look in mirrors.... I am like a vampire--I shy away from mirrors. I comb my hair using my silhouette on the wall to show the outline of my head. I have not looked myself in the eyes in years, and is painful not to be able to do that, and that is a direct result of acne, the acne scarring."
Like a vampire, hating mirrors! Unable to face himself, how can this person hope to face the world?
Verbatim #2
"I think that if I had more self-esteem about the way I looked, I think I would have been more outgoing. I would have gone to more parties. I probably would have been more outspoken in class and would not have felt so insecure about going up and speaking in front of a group of classmates."
Here is an extrovert, turned in on himself (or herself) because of acne. Who knows how different things would have been if he didn't have acne?
Verbatim #3
"It is really humiliating to feel like I have no control over my acne. I hold my head down and I am ashamed to look at: people, embarrassed. I am 25 years old and to be acting this way is very frustrating."
In just three sentences, this person revealed humiliation, lack of control, shame, embarrassment and frustration. With the treatments available today, there is no reason to suffer like this.
Verbatim #4
"It's associated with being dirty, and I hate that, because it's not at all like that. I inherited it from my mother, and she's always telling me that she had the exact same thing and that it will go away. I am mad that I inherited it from her. My dad makes me feel bad because he never had bad skin when he was younger, so he doesn't understand.... I hate that the first thing people see when they look at me is bad skin. I really. really hate that."
Myths about acne are a common source of family conflict. Teenagers tend to be rebellious anyway--do they need to have acne misinformation driving another wedge between them and their parents? One myth that makes this family situation worse: The notion that nothing can be done to clear serious acne sooner than if it were left alone.
Verbatim #5
"I feel like I don't look right no matter how hard I try to dress up and look nice--there is always that area of pimples there, and it is very unsettling. There really hasn't been a day gone by that I don't think about it, or look at my face.... Should I spend that much energy on it? I could be doing other things...instead of wasting 5 to 10 minutes every day looking at my face in the mirror, or playing with it, picking at my acne."
This person is so preoccupied with acne that he almost neurotically picks at it. He is also clearly frustrated, as acne thwarts all attempts at achieving a good appearance.
These testimonials show the extent of the psychological, emotional and social disturbances that acne can cause. Clearing up the acne would relieve the source of these disturbances, but many people don't realize that something can be done.
Many myths about acne, especially regarding diet and hygiene, are still considered to be true. And many parents and older siblings are stuck in the attitude of past generations that nothing can really be done but wait it out.
Making matters worse, there is confusion among people with acne and their families about what works and what doesn't. They are often frustrated by products that promise to clear skin but that don't work for them.
Some nonprescription products may be more effective than others, but dermatologists have treatments that work just about 100% of the time. Most cases of acne can be cleared up with the right treatment.

Acne Treatment And Skin Care Review
1. Acne is a condition of the sebaceous glands of the skin. These sebaceous glands surround each hair follicle and produce sebum, an oily substance, to lubricate the hair. Acne usually appears on the face, back and chest. We list the causes of Acne.
2. Acne can be aggravated by sunlight, stress, allergies, alcohol, spicy foods and extremes in temperatures.
3. Retinoids at first dry and exfoliate the skin to minimize acne symptoms, but over time they may destroy the skin and cause severe disfigurement: "a flaming red, scaling, papule-covered face". AHA, BHA, and Accutane are examples of retinoids.
4. The use of antibiotics eventually leads to the development of resistant bacteria.)
5. Stress aggravates acne and rosacea.
6. Cigarette smoking aggravates acne and rosacea.
7. Alcohol provokes acne-related facial flushing (redness) because it dehydrates the body.
8. Lifestyle changes and healthy habits can greatly reduce the redness, pimples, and other symptoms of acne. Recommended lifestyle changes:
Reduce stress.
Drink at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water (2 liters) per day. Ten to twelve glasses (3 liters) per day is recommended.Water should be icy cold. The hypothalamus, the body's "thermostat", cannot properly regulate temperature (and prevent facial flushing) unless kept cool and supplied with adequate water. Water also hydrates the skin, preventing clogged pores. Increasing your water intake will also help to reduce facial redness and excess oil.
Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, tobacco products and excessive sugar.
Avoid alcohol.
Avoid vigorous scrubbing, exfoliants, and other abrasives.
Use the right soap. Most soaps are too harsh for acne-afflicted skin.
Recognize and avoid foods and beverages which provoke an acne-related allergic reaction.
Avoid large meals; eat instead three small meals.
Exercise.
Avoid astringents and astringent soaps.
Change wash-cloths and body towels after each use.
Avoid the sun as much as possible. Sun exposure aggravates acne.

Acne Skin Care For Men
Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a fancy name for the acne-like breakouts commonly called "shaving bumps." As hairs begin to grow back after shaving, they get trapped inside the follicle and cause irritation and swelling. Not everyone gets shaving bumps; people with curly hair are more susceptible, but anyone can take steps to prevent them. If you can, use an electric razor. If you prefer blade shaving, use a new, single-edge blade every time you shave. Prep the area with warm water and use a rich shaving cream. Always shave with the grain, not against it. Then, after you're done, apply a mild toner or antibacterial gel.
